Simmo plays in FA Cup first round
on November 10, 2014
Congratulations to SEFA Scholar Aaron Simpson who played in Maidstone United’s FA Cup First Round game against Stevenage on Sunday.
Simmo, who has made the final round of England Schoolboy trials, came on as a late substitute for Jamie Coyle as the Stones defied the odds to get a 0-0 draw against the League Two outfit at the Lamex Stadium.
United will now host Stevenage on Tuesday week in a replay at the Gallagher Stadium.
SEFA Director of Coaching Lee Spiller said: “I am incredibly proud of Aaron and the fact he has now played in the FA Cup first round proper is a testament to his hard work since joining the Scholars over a year ago.
“Simmo has always stood out as someone who has a first class attitude and has consistently shown he wants to improve himself – and he is now getting his rewards away from the Scholars at his club football.
“The whole day would have been a superb experience for Aaron and there is no doubt playing at a Football League ground in front of a large and passionate crowd will give him the hunger to continue to push towards the next level.
“Along with Kaiyne Woolery [now of Bolton Wanderers], Aaron is a perfect example of what is possible for SEFA Scholarship players who train and play daily in an environment fully focussed on player development.
“For every trophy and plaudit we have had as a team, the real success of any scholarship scheme should be judged on how many players are developed to a standard where they can move into first team football at a good level. We continue to do this across the board as well as seeing players move into Scholarships in America and into full time job roles within our company.
“The sky is the limit for Simmo now and I look forward to following his progress over the coming months both at the Scholarship and in his club football!”
