STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Few players get football strength training right. Today’s performers must be complete athletes in order to achieve their full potential and play at the highest level. Players have to be explosive off the mark and excel over 10-20 yards. They have to have the upper body strength to resist challenges. Excellent levels of both aerobic and anaerobic endurance ensuring players last the duration of a high intensity game and a strong and dynamic core to prevent injuries.

WHAT IS STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING?

Football is an extremely high energy sport with a lot of movement. Players require sprinting ability, agility, power, endurance, anaerobic capacity and several other key components. The game is dominated by short explosive sprints with a combination of light jogs from one play to another. Power is required to shoot at goal or make a long pass. Goal keepers need to be able to jump high as well as laterally. Direction changes are constant during a game of footbal, so agility is essential.

Taking all of the above into account SEFA Perfromance have all the information we need for the complete strength and conditioning individual programmes. Here we will look at each of the skills involved in football in terms of physiological capacity. This means we will not focus on actual specific football drills, but instead we will focus on strength and conditioning for football in the purely physical sense. Exercises, injury prevention techniques and core work will be the focus, allowing the player to work against resistance and improve muscular strength and explosive power.

Our specific programmes will concentrate on key areas and their benefits, educating our players whilst they see improvement. Tests and feedback will allow players to set goals and targets giving extra motivation and purpose. The key areas players should be looking to strengthen and improve are:

  • Core

  • Muscular power and strength

  • Injury prevention

  • Speed, agility and quickness

  • Aerobic and anaerobic endurance

SEFA Performance has designed specific fitness programmes and tests to ensure players are developing these key areas in player development. SEFA’s programmes allow maximum player progression and player feedback. The tailored and unique techniques will co-exist and work closely with all SAQ sessions allowing the perfect balance between intense training, recovery and understanding your own game.

This player support system will allow players, parents and coaches alike the chance to learn and monitor fitness levels and test results. Providing a direct insight into an individual’s strength’s and weaknesses that will signal the immediate direction for improvement specific to each area. Our targeted areas have been designed to achieve the following;

  • To prepare the joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons for more intense work in subsequent phases

  • To strengthen underused stabilizer muscles

  • To balance the right and left side of the body

  • To redress the balance between the flexors and extensors (football players, for example, are notorious for having over-developed quads from repetitive kicking actions. No wonder hamstring injuries are so prevalent in the game).

Players will touch these areas in all SAQ sessions to allow progression and improvement.
